SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
It’s about joining with other communities trying to remove avoidable single-use plastic (like throwaway coffee cups, bottles, carrier bags and food packaging), to clean up outdoor spaces and to protect future generations, wildlife and the environment in general.
It’s not about eliminating all plastic – much of it is essential. There have been successes nationally already with bans on straws, cutlery, stirrers, cotton bud sticks and some food packaging.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Balloons are the highest risk plastic item for sea-birds and turtles. They look like food floating on the water’s surface and animals can ingest them or even feed them to their young.
- 60% of clothing fibres are synthetics, such as plastic based polyester or nylon and that the clothing industry accounts for 8-10% of global greenhouse gases which causes Climate Change.
- Microplastics, tiny plastic particles, are commonly used in makeup products like exfoliating scrubs, eyeshadows, and foundations, and can pose risks to both human health and the environment. These particles, when washed down the drain, can end up in waterways and eventually the food chain.
